Merry Monday!
We are jumping for joy that it is nearly Christmas vacation. These are a few of the least blurry photos I got today. I will try to get better ones in January. We are becoming quite the jumpers in first grade! I am proud of their effort and love the excitement.
Christmas service tomorrow at 9:30. Children, please dress up. Our class party will follow the service. School is dismissed at noon.
Have a lovely Christ-centered Christmas!

Friday!
Happy Weekend!
We had a great day at school. We started our day with Christmas practice and chapel. Ask your child about Mr. H's chapel. "Why did Jesus come?" The answer is summed up in these three letters. P L L... Promise, Love and Life. Talk about these at home.
Spelling Test was today. Your child made fixes at school if needed. They will be sent home Monday.
Math- we did work with pattern blocks.
Spanish: I read a Spanish Christmas book, Twas Noche Buena.
Art: We finished your gift! It was sent home today. Merry Christmas.

Thursday
The Weekly Note was sent home.
Bible: We reviewed the Golden Calf and talked about how wee can make things in our lives "gods" by putting them ahead of God.
Math: We counted pennies in "pairs" today (count by 2s). Our story problem also had us draw in pairs.
Superkids: We spent a long time reviewing spelling words and pattern words. Test tomorrow. I also read a cool historical fiction book, A Christmas Tree in the White House (about T Roosevelt's family). Ask about it.
The kids used their spelling words to write sentences this afternoon. Ask to see them.
Have a nice evening.

Wednesday
Bible: We learned the story of the Golden Calf. How could the Israelites make a god of gold, just after God guided them and protected them on their journey out of Egypt? May God strengthen our faith so we stand firm in Him! There is no Memory Treasure. We have been working hard on recitations for our Christmas service.
Superkids: We reviewed our spelling rules and patterns words. We also did several pages in our workbook to practice. Spelling Test Friday. Thanks for practicing at home.
The kids have enjoyed reading even more Christmas books in my room. I have borrowed about 30 from the FdL library. How fun!
Math: Today we began to spell the numbers zero-ten. Check over 63 tonight. We did most of the work in class.
Music and gym today, too!
Lunch tomorrow is hotn dogs, not turkey haystack.
Please send back the church attendance slip. Thanks. I have been trying to do it orally to save paper and time, but I got a bit behind.

Tuesday
We welcomed a new friend to class for a visit today. Kristina will likely join our class in the new year. Her family is moving here. She loved the card and photo we sent home with her.
Bible: We reviewed the 10 Commandment story today. God gave us his rules because he loves us and this is one way He protects us. His rules are summed up as the LAW. Since we can not keep His commands perfectly, He also sent His own Son to save us. The sweet message of the GOSPEL is better than Christmas cookies.
Superkids: We reviewed Golly Helps, and did more spelling practice. We are spending a lot of time reading and writing long and short vowel words.
Math: Lesson 62. Today we measured different objects with linking cubes. What fun to estimate first, then measure for the actual.
English: We are doing a better job and finding the subject, verb, adverb and adjectives in sentences.
Finally, we enjoyed Math Stations.
Ask about the 12 Days of Christmas video. We gracefully danced our way through a calmer version. :)

Thursday
Bible: The kids have been great at remembering the details of the story as we review each Tuesday and Thursday. They have been great listeners and your review of the story at home helps. Today we thanked God for our "manna and quail," the food He gives us each day.
Superkids: Today we started Unit 8! Our new spelling rule is Drop the silent, super e when adding -ing or -ed to our long vowel words. We did several pages in our workbook to get familiar with this rule. We also reviewed the rule about doubling the consonant in some short vowel words when adding -ing or -ed. The new spelling words were sent home in the Weekly Note.
Math: Test today. No homework.
English: We wrote a story about a Christmas sysmbol today. I have some great, independent writers. Ask to see their page.
Science: Our new simple machine was a Pulley. You can make or find one at home tonight.
Have a lovely evening.

Tuesday
We had a great day.
Bible: Review of Crossing the Red Sea. Many children said their Memory Treasure. The rest will recite it tomorrow.
Superkids: We reviewed our poem and found the descriptive words in it (wiggling, speckled, cute...) We also practiced our spelling words with two different games. Ask about spelling words going around in our circle, and spelling words on the wipe off boards in groups of four. We passed the board around and each changed the word by a letter or two to make a new word.
Math: Today we practiced more "adding two," this time to odd numbers. See the back of the 100 chart page for the math challenge work we did this morning.
We also did math and reading stations today! Ask which stations your child went to.
English: We reviewed classifying sentences today. Wow- it went better that last time. Hooray! Thank your child for their hard work.
Everyone went home with a Christmas book tonight. Happy Reading!
We also took the class Spelling Bee test today. We have a winner. He/She will be announced tomorrow! School Spelling Bee at 1:30. See you in the church if you want to join us. The lower grade winners will be awarded a medal, too.

Monday
We had a fabulous day!
Bible: Crossing the Red Sea. Thank you, Lord, for keeping Israelites safe from the Egyptians. Thank you, also, for keeping me safe each day. Isaiah 41:10 Do not fear for I am with you, do not be dismayed for I am your God.
Superkids: We read the poem Today I Got a Gift. pg 97-98. Read that and my Christmas poems attached to the assignment chart tonight. No ziplocs.
Math: 58B We have begun to add 2 to even numbers. We also did math stations today.
Science: We reviewed wedges and levers and learned a new one, an inclined plane. Make a ramp tonight for cars for trucks to carry a load. I also demonstrated with a triangle piece of paper wrapped around a marker how a screw has an inclined plane wrapped around it.
This am we also went into groups to practice the Christmas service. A-J and K-Z last names.
Finally, we did more jumping in gym and played boom whackers in music.

Friday
Happy Birthday to Cecilia and Mara (both tomorrow). We partied for Cecilia in the morning. Her Fishing snack was fun and delicious. In the afternoon we partied with Mara. Her Dilly Bars were also delicious and we enjoyed them outside (in Dec)!!! THANK YOU, girls.
Chapel: Pastor Haugly gave us a lovely reminder from God's Word about John the Baptist preparing the way for Jesus. May we prepare for our Savior's coming, too, during this time of so many other worldly distractions.
Superkids: We reviewed our pattern words, spelling words and learned how to spell possessives ('s). All the kids had Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) time and ipad time this afternoon, too.
Math: We began to write the numbers on our clock faces today and write the time digitally and on an analog clock. Lesson 57 is due Mon.
Art: Ask about the sewing project we did. What fun. The kids did great! They sewed a border around a 6 inch square of burlap. We put a recycled Christmas card picture of baby Jesus in the center.
Christmas practice rounded out our day.
Have a super weekend. See you in church. You are welcome to come help decorate the front of church Sat at 9 am. The trees are HUGE and it is a joy to bring beauty to God's house. I may see some of you bowling on Sunday afternoon, too.

Thursday
Happy Thrilling Thursday.
Bible: Review the Passover. Every child recited their memory treasures, too.
Superkids: We reread "Kites." We reviewed our pattern words and found lots in the story (hope, while, name... words that end with the super, silent magic e).
Math: 56 B We reviewed odd and even numbers.
Science: Ask about the wedges I brought to school. We reveiwed levers, too. I pounded a wedge (nail) into the board and used a lever (hammer head) to pull it out.
Reading stations and ziplocs to end the day.
Writing: Wow! Today we remembered a character we created a few weeks ago (or made up a new one). Then we wrote a story about that character with a problem and solution. I was super proud to see the whole class busy writing 4 or more lines with no help (after being familiar with my example). What fun to share and discuss each story.
A Weekly Note was sent home. We hope you feel better Aidan. We missed you.

Wednesday
Good evening.
We had an awesome day. The kids even earned a letter in the word that spells their next prize. The names were handed out for the Christmas Exchange, too. Check the money pouch.
Bible: Please read 2A, the Passover. Ask how Jesus is like the lamb. Jn 1:29 "Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world." is the Memory Treasure.
Superkids: Please read the story Kites. Those creative Superkids are up to more fun!
Math: Test today. No homework.
We also had time for one rotation of the new math stations and reading stations. Ask what your child did.
The whole school gathered to practice the Christmas service this afternoon. It was the first practice and already is sounding good. Can't wait! My class loves to sing the songs.
Remember to set aside time for Advent worship (Wed nights at 3:30 and 6:30). Pastor Parsons preached a great sermon about two unlikely women in Jesus' family tree (Tamar and Rahab). Praise God for his grace in including us in his family, too.

Tuesday
The kids were greeted with new Nativity name tags, a new pencil and an eraser today. Happy December and Advent! Our mini class tree is up, too.
Bible: We reviewed the Plagues. We talked about how we can be like Pharaoh sometimes, disobedient and stubborn. Praise the Lord that He fills our hearts with sorrow over sin, which P did not have. We rejoice in our forgiveness through Jesus.
Superkids: More practice with the magic, super e to turn short vowel words into long vowel words.
See the new spelling list in the money pouch.
Math: Lesson 55.
English: I read a beautifully illustrated book about adjectives. We identified subject nouns, adjectives, adverbs and articles in sentences.
Science: Today we talked about our first simple machine, a lever. What fun to try to get our levers (rulers) to balance on the fulcrum (half a toilet paper tube) with different loads (pennies). Try it at home. We could even get the lever to balance with three pennies on one side and no pennies on the other!
The Name Exchange will be sent home tomorrow.
MONDAY Recap!
Farewell November. The room will have several changes tomorrow to welcome the new month and the Advent season.
Today it was fun to be back together and share about our long Thanksgiving weekend. Ask "Who went to the Dells" "Who had a birthday party" (2 kids). "Who watched movies with grandparents?"
Bible: Read The Plagues, story 1B. Memory Treasure: Ps 14:1a The fool says in his heart, "There is no God."
Superkids: We started unit 7 today. The new words are on the back of the homework chart. New books came home in the ziplocs, too. Our new words have the silent, super e at the end to make the vowel sound long.
Science: We started a new unit on Simple Machines. Today we talked about "work" and "force." Tomorrow we will discuss and create levers.
Math: 54B Our lesson was on symmetry. Ask to the the tree your child drew and cut. It is the same on both sides! We practiced our mental math facts, too.
A December calendar was sent home. Please sign the church attendance form for Thanksgiving worship and Sunday worship. Thanks.
Book orders are due today by 9 PM. Order online at Scholastic.com. Use the code GVM93. Books are great gifts.
We will do a gift exchange in class. Girls for girls, boys for boys. I will send the names home tomorrow.
