We had a fabulous Friday!

Quilt Book:  Today I read and ABC Quilt Book that had riddles.  How fun!

I am super proud of the graph below.  It shows all the Quilt Books we have read and which are our favorites.  I used the graph to ask questions like which has the most?  Fewest?  How many more of ____ than _____?

Thursday

I can't believe February is drawing to a close.  We are working hard in first grade as the third quarter also draws to and end.

Wednesday

Wonderful Wednesday!

We started our day with a devotion by 8th grader Jack R.  He read  the story about a man finding a treasure in a field, hiding it there, selling everything and buying the field to get the treasure.  May we 1) recognize the treasure we have in Jesus and do all we can to cling to him.

Bible:  Ruth and  Boaz.  Read 13B tonight.  God blessed them with a son and a Savior who would come from their family.  The MT  is Ps  37:5!  See  the homework chart.

Reading:  We did more work with our spelling words and pattern words.  We reviewed our Superkids story and did workbook pages.  The kids also had Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) time.

Math:  We did lesson 92 today.  We are beginning to arrange numbers in order from 1-100.  The kids loved Math Duel on the ipads.  They play in pairs and try to answer fact problems very quickly.

Social Studies:  Today our story was The Josefina Story Quilt.  Ask about it.  A young girl, Faith, and her family journey west in a covered wagon.  We read and discussed their hardships along the way.  Ask "Who was Josefina?"

A  library book was sent home.  Happy reading.  AR tests tomorrow!!!

Good  evening,

We had a busy day in First Grade.

Writing:  The kids had to write several sentences in response to my book about Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad.

Social Studies:  Today I read "Sweet  Clara and The Freedom Quilt."  It is about a slave girl who becomes a seamstress.  She listened well to what people said about the nearby landscape and made a quilt map.  She and many others escaped to freedom by knowing her map.
Sweet Clara and "Aunt Rachel" study her map quilt.

Everyone brought home a library book to read tonight.  :)

Please mark your child's church attendance sheet, too.  Thanks.  I got a bit behind.

Wow!  Florida was fabulous.  We hung out on the beach.  I soaked in the sun.   Lucas made snowmen out of the sand and Jenna looked for shells.   2 dolphins made their  appearance Saturday.  It was pretty awesome.  My parents were thrilled to have us, but were happy to resume their busy, retired life today. :)  They rent a small trailer in a community in Ft Myers Beach.

Tuesday

It was a terrific Tuesday in school.

Bible:   We reviewed Samson.  Ask about the lion and honey riddle from the Bible.   More importantly Samson used his abilities to do God's will.  We considered the many abilities God has given us and how we can use them to serve him.   Everyone recited their  memory treasure, too.

Superkids:  We reviewed our spelling words and patterns words.  We did lots of writing today, too.  Ask to read the "I wish..." page.

Monday

Welcome back from our long weekend.

I had a great time at our teacher's conference on Thursday.   The opening worship was inspiring.  Our keynote speaker encouraged us to evaluate our classrooms and schools and make positive changes, don't get stuck in the same old rut.  I went to two sessions that afternoon.  A former high school teacher of mine, Dr. Dan Johnson, now the  President of WLC in Milwaukee spoke about the Sustainability of Lutheran Schools.   Finally, I listened to a former 4th grade student of mine,  Eric Nelson, (from my student teaching days in Muskego, WI) talk about the new website he has created with a geography and current events focus for middle school age kids.  How cool!

Friday, I visited  St. Marcus Lutheran school in downtown Milwaukee.  The first grade class there was similar to ours, 28 students and one full-time aid.  Our curriculum is very similar.  I did take note of some new classroom routines and procedures.  We even started some today.  Ask about "Stand 1."  "Stand 2."  We were more orderly in our reading station transitions, too.

Bible:  Please read Samson tonight.  12A  The memory treasure is right on the homework chart.

Reading:  Everyone should have taken home a library book tonight.

Math:   We used pennies and dimes to begin adding two digit numbers with regrouping!!!  We "traded" 10 pennies for a dime.  23 cents plus 58 cents= 11 pennies and 7 dimes.  Then trade 10 pennies for a dime.  Now we have 8 dimes and 1 penny= 81 cents.

Science:  We wrapped up our study of dinosaurs today.  It has been fun.  The kids remembered much on our review page, too.  It was sent home.

Spelling Test tomorrow!  The words are on the homework chart on Monday.

Happy Birthday Johnathan.  Thanks for the birthday ice cream treat!

Everyone loves giving and receiving Valentines!

Tuesday, February 9, 2016

Good afternoon!

We did lots of reading in class today.  I am so proud of my first graders!

Bible:   The class remembered a lot about Gideon.  See the worksheet we did.  Everyone said their Memory Treasure, too.

Superkids:  We read "The  Wish"  in class.   Today, we practiced  reading with expression.  What fun to shout "Lunch!" on the first page of the story.

Spelling:  We read and used our spelling words in sentences.  We wrote them several times, too.

Math:  Today we cut out and counted paper pennies in groups of ten with extra single pennies if needed.  The kids had to show amounts like 34 cents and 17 cents and 52 cents.  Do  lesson 85 tonight.  Test tomorrow.

Science:  We spent more  time on dinosaurs today.  We practiced reading and matching vocabulary words to definitions (bones- a hard part of the body that gives it shape, museum- a building that has  important things from history or science)...We pasted the pairs in our Science Journal and added illustrations as time allowed.

Valentines Party at 1:00 tomorrow.  Minute to Win It Games in the large commons are planned.

Birthday Cheer:  The  class called Mrs. Sharon Kemnitz yesterday morning.  She is a wonderful woman from church with health difficulties right now.  We sang Happy Birthday and Jesus, Name of  Wondrous  Love, hymn 76 (our favorite).

Monday

We were back at it and busy today.  The class does have a lot of homework tonight.  Sorry.  I will go easier on them the rest of the week.  :)

Bible:  We learned about Gideon today.  Read 11A.  Memory Treasure is on the blue sheet.  Talk about the Bible verses tonight during your evening family devotion.  The blue sheet is due tomorrow.
Superkids:  We read our next story.  It took us to a beach on a hot day!  Please have your child read "The Wish" tonight.  Pg 18-30.

Math:  Lesson 84 and fact sheet both sides.  It was stapled if your child did not get both sides done in 5 min.

Science: We studied dinosaurs  more.  Rowan shared a great book.  Thanks.

A WLA senior, Justin Kraus, came and read 3 books to us.  He is #4 on the varsity basketball team (for Samantha's Dad). Other seniors read to PreK-2nd grade.

Our Valentine bags are ready.   You may send them.  The kids may hand them out in the morning.

Our  Valentine party is set for Wednesday.  All items have been accounted for.   Thanks for signing up.  Should be a fun  Minute to Win It afternoon.

Thursday

It was a thrilling Thursday!
Bible:  Your kids loved the account of Joshua and the Israelites at Gibeon.  I was proud to tell them that even my 4th grade daughter didn't know about the 5 kings hiding in a cave.  We learned and remembered many details about the story.   The kids recited Mt 6:33.

Superkids:  Today we learned a new spelling rule.  Change the y to an i and add the ending (-er, -est).  We practiced with words like sunny, sunnier, and sunniest.  Hungry,  hungrier, and  hungriest.  We read our Dinosaur poems, too.  Fun!

Math:  We  made a class graph about the Number of Kids in our Family.  No one is a single child in this class.  9 have 2 kids, 12 have 3 kids, 4 have 4 kids and 1 has 6!  Ask who.  :)  Then we compared "How many more...?"  Do  lesson 82 tonight

Fact sheet:  Today I am expecting the fact sheet to be completed at home and sent back. Today it was stapled to the lesson.  Some kids needed extra time to complete it.

English:  We wrote some sentences with words from a "word bank."

Science:  We read more about dinosaurs.  I told them some books say "65 million years ago."  We know God made the dinosaurs on day 6 with the other animals.  Those scientists who write those things do not believe God's Word.  We can still read the books for the other fun information.

An email was sent about signing up for the Valentine party.  Let me know it you did not get it.  The Weekly Note also came home today.

Welcome Kristina, "Tina!"  She joined our class today.  We did a lovely job telling her what comes next in our day and how we do things in class.  It was fun to review our Name Game from the first few days of school.  The class wore name  tags, too, to help our new friend.

We had 3 Winter Wonderland recesses.  I heard "This is the best day ever!"

Bible:  Achan's Sin.  We discussed how there are consequences for our sins sometimes.  Praise God, not like Achan's!  We are forgiven by Jesus and filled with His love.  May we share it by our words and actions.  The kids did a nice job reciting the 9th Comm.  Thank you for working on it last night.
